First time flying into Austin and a few observations. The airport is small, 36 total gates, we walked around the entire airport 2 just checking food options. I will say that although small, it is quite nice inside, even if it is cold inside this February day. Many restaurants and bars, but your over all choices are but a handful of food types. To my surprise, only one Texas BBQ place. If you need libations or beer, your choices are endless. Many, many restaurants offer full bar service. After checking all I the restaurants, only 2, that we found had chips and salsa. Every airline has their club level here, which was surprising. Given we had a lay over, plus a delay we looked in every nook and corner. The English coffee machines were fascinating. I guess a nice airport comes at a cost, everything is beyond what I would consider normal airport pricing. I would consider flying through here again.
Warning ⚠️ - do not fly in/out of this airport. If you're unlucky enough to be in the South Terminal be prepared for aggravating delays. The shuttle has no schedule and you have to take it if you need to use the rental car facility. Uber was $25 to avoid using the shuttle. I chose the cheaper route and now I'm regretting it. Been sitting on a hot shuttle parked for the last 10 minutes at the main terminal because they won't leave unless the bus has more passengers (it seems to run quite infrequently). I fly a lot and take most airport issues in stride, but this is crazy frustrating. Driver here doesn't care about anyone's time. Not to mention the actual drive in this death trap (the shuttle is unsafe and drives on non-airport roads to the S. Terminal) is like 10-15 minutes. And, to make it that much worse, the signage from the rental car center to the shuttle is non-existent. So many issues. I'll never use this airport again to get to central Texas.
This is a great mid sized airport. My home town of Brisbane Australia has an airport with very similar passenger numbers to Austin. The security process here was much more efficient and the selection of dining options were excellent.
I don’t know about the main terminal but the south terminal is a joke. Shuttle bus to south terminal took about 30 minutes. I was just glad we made it. Piece of junk. No restaurants just a snack bar. First time out of this airport and probably the last. I hope they are working on doing away with the south terminal. It only services Frontier and Allegiant
What a fun, artsy, and intelligently designed airport. Sadly, I have low expectations of airports these days and stopping here was refreshing and so much fun. I forgot I was at an airport. I sincerely can’t wait to stop here again for the food, art, and shopping. Oh yea, and to visit Austin.
